Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that allows you to file taxes and claim tax credits. Individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) are eligible for an ITIN. Low-income Californians who file tax returns with an ITIN are eligible to claim the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) and Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC). The Office is assisting with outreach and education on what an ITIN is, how to apply, and its benefits.

OCPSC ITIN Community Outreach Report

Requested by the legislature to support public awareness on the ITIN, OCPSC engaged its trusted messenger network of community-based organizations. These organizations provided those who could benefit from applying for an ITIN with accurate and culturally-relevant materials to increase awareness of eligibility and the application process. This report illustrates OCPSC’s ITIN outreach accomplishments between April 2023 – May 2024.

An ITIN is an important step in establishing financial stability and credit history for individuals and families. An ITIN can provide access to not only tax credits, but also the opportunity to open a bank account, apply for a mortgage to purchase a home, and secure financial aid for college.

Through collaboration and coordination with other state agencies, OCPSC helps equip CBOs with information to engage their communities and raise awareness on ITIN, in an effort to reduce the racial wealth gap in California. The Office does this by sharing state resources on what is available to ITIN holders in California, education on what an ITIN is and why it is important to have, information for CBOs interested in learning how to support ITIN applications, and access to multi-language informational flyers and social media toolkits.
