Fun activities for children and information for adults to learn daily habits to help conserve water
LOS ANGELES (Oct. 20, 2023) – Save Our Water, the state’s water conservation program, is educating Californians on how to make water conservation a way of life. The Taste of Soul Family Festival in Los Angeles is the program’s latest stop on a tour of state fairs and community events.
On Saturday, October 21, 2023, thousands of festival goers will be able to stop by and visit the Save Our Water booth, featuring a selfie-worthy Save Our Water bear bench and a California native plant oasis under a water drop tent. Children can enjoy activities in the water-wise kid zone while parents learn about tips and tools to create beautiful, water-efficient yards and gardens.
As California is experiencing climate shifts that bring more extreme weather, resulting in a swing of its driest three years on record and some of the wettest weeks in recent history, conserving water has never been more important.
“We have created a fun and educational experience for the entire family to be a part of,” said Yurina Melara Valiulis, Multiethnic Press Secretary for the Office of Community Partnership and Strategic Communications at the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research. “Save Our Water wants to help Californians transform their thirsty green lawns into a functional water-wise landscape that fits their budgets and family’s lifestyle.”
Dr. Sherridan Ross, master gardener for the Compton Community Garden, will be on hand to talk to festival attendees about the use of California native plants, such as succulents, and mulch as ways to save water when gardening.
“Using mulch is one the easiest and most cost-effective ways to conserve water in your yard,” said Dr. Ross. “Mulch adds a unique aesthetic and helps retain soil moisture and rainwater longer, reducing the amount of time and money spent watering.”
Visitors can walk away with a variety of Save Our Water giveaways, including California native plants provided by Bonnie Plants, and free bags of mulch provided by L.A. Sanitation & Environment (LASAN). Los Angeles residents can learn how to receive free mulch by visiting www.lacitysan.org/freemulch. Children will be able to take home Save Our Water coloring books.
